# Node.js Development

Node.js runs JavaScript on the server. It handles many open connections at once, which makes it a good fit for APIs, real-time features such as live updates and chat, and back ends that share a language with a React or Vue front end.

## Projects

**Kanban Zone**: Node.js with Express behind a React front end, for a visual process management SaaS. [Read the case study](/kanbanzone/).

**MetaBeta**: Node.js behind a Vue.js front end, for a startup and investor platform. [Read the case study](/metabeta/).

**Wooter**: Laravel and Node.js on the back end, with Socket.IO for live updates and Redis for caching, for a sports league platform and app. [Read the case study](/wooter/).

Full JavaScript stacks: [MERN](/web-development/mern/) and [MEVN](/web-development/mevn/) development.

## Frequently asked questions

### Node.js or Laravel for our back end?

Both work for most web products. Node.js makes sense when the team already writes JavaScript or TypeScript, or when the app needs many live connections. Laravel gives you more built in, such as queues, auth and an ORM, and is faster for classic business apps. On Wooter we used both.

### Do you use Express or NestJS?

Both. Express is minimal and fine for smaller APIs; Kanban Zone runs on it. NestJS adds structure, dependency injection and TypeScript by default, which helps larger codebases stay organized.

### Can Node.js handle real-time features?

Yes, it is one of its strengths. On Wooter we used Socket.IO to push live updates to users. Chat, notifications, collaborative editing and live dashboards follow the same pattern.

### Do you write Node.js in TypeScript?

For new projects, usually yes, because types catch mistakes before they reach production and make large codebases easier to change. Existing JavaScript projects can move to TypeScript file by file.

### Can you add AI features to a Node.js back end?

Yes. Node.js has official SDKs for the major model providers and works well for streaming model output to the browser. See [AI agent development](/services/ai-agent-development/).
